Common Procedures

The Neuroscience Institute at Northside Hospital prides itself on being able to provide technological advanced minimally-invasive treatment options for various neurological conditions, including:

  • Arterio-Venous Malformation Embolization
    • This minimally invasive procedure involves the insertion of a catheter ito the site of the AVM and delivers a glue-like substance to eliminate blood flow to the malformation.
  • Carotid Artery Stenting
    • Carotid Artery Stenting is a minimally invasive procedure that can be used to open narrowed carotid arteries. A catheter is inserted and advanced into the carotid artery, which can then be opened and/or stented.
  • Cerebral Aneurysm Coiling
    • Aneurysm Coiling involves  the insertion of a catheter to the site of the aneurysm.  Very small wires are then used to fill the aneurysm,  cutting off the blood flow to the clot and preventing rupture.
  • Computer Navigated Assisted Cranial & Spinal Surgery
  • Intravenous t-PA
    • When a stroke occurs, a patient may be a good candidate for t-PA, which is a drug that is injected into the blood stream  to dissolve the blood clot causing the stroke.
  • Minimally invasive spine procedures
  • Neurodiagnostics
    • Cerebral angiogram
    • CT angiography
    • CT Perfusion
    • EEG (electroencephalogram)
    • MRA (magnetic resonance angiography)
    • MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
    • TEE (transesophageal echocardiogram)
  • Non-surgical cranial and spinal tumor treatment
  • Onyx Glue
    • Onyx glue is a liquid plastic polymer that is inserted into an aneurysm to fill the space.  It then hardens, cutting off the blood flow to prevent rupture of the aneurysm.
  • Shunt Insertions
