Northside Hospital Recognizes World Sepsis Day
September 12, 2012
St. Petersburg, FL - Northside Hospital is proud to recognize the Inaugural World Sepsis Day on Thursday, September 13, 2012. This global initiative is sponsored by the Global Sepsis Alliance (GSA) to raise awareness about sepsis, one of the leading causes of death throughout the world.
Northside Hospital will be educating its staff and physicians on the detection, treatment, and prevention of sepsis, and the measures that can be taken to reduce instances in the healthcare setting. The hospital has four educational seminars planned, as well as a hospital-wide education campaign, in order to unite all departments together in the fight against infection.
According to the GSA, sepsis is a life-threatening condition that arises when the body’s response to infection injures its own tissues and organs. Sepsis may lead to shock, multiple organ failure and death, especially if not recognized early and treated promptly. It afflicts more than 750,000 Americans each year and causes more deaths per year than myocardial infarction; prostate, breast and colon cancers; and HIV/AIDS combined.
