Northside Hospital Receives Get With the Guidelines Award in 2012

St. Petersburg, FL — Northside Hospital has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®–Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award at the association’s International Stroke Conference 2012. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment and success in implementing a high standard of care by ensuring that stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, evidence-based guidelines.Northside Hospital is one of 453 hospitals to be recognized for the Gold Plus Award, among the 677 total hospitals to be given quality achievement awards at the conference.
To receive the Gold Plus Quality Achievement award, hospitals must achieve 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines–Stroke achievement indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month periods and achieved 75 percent or higher compliance with five of eight Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Quality Measures, which are reporting initiatives to measure quality of care.“With a stroke, time lost is brain lost, and this award demonstrates our commitment to being one of the top hospitals in the country for providing aggressive, proven care for the patients we treat,” said Stephen J. Daugherty, President and CEO of Northside Hospital. “We will continue with our focus on providing care that has been shown in the scientific literature to quickly and efficiently treat stroke patients with evidence-based protocols.”
Through Get With The Guidelines–Stroke, Northside Hospital is tracking comprehensive efforts to rapidly diagnose and treat stroke patients admitted to the emergency department. This includes being equipped to provide brain imaging scans, having neurologists available to conduct patient evaluations and using clot-busting medications when appropriate.
“Northside Hospital is committed to providing our patients the highest quality care based on the most current and robust scientific research,” said Daugherty. “The Get With The Guidelines program is giving our healthcare providers the tools they need to improve the quality of care and long-term outcomes for our stroke patients.”Northside Hospital recently became a Comprehensive Stroke Center, the only in St. Petersburg, and one of two in Pinellas County.
The hospital also offers an interventional Neuroradiology program, which highly advanced and minimally-invasive options to treat stroke and other neurological conditions. According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is one of the leading causes of death and serious, long-term disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
