Northside Hospital Breathing Club Shows Off Their Progress with Holiday Concert
(December 20, 2010 - St. Petersburg, FL) - Northside Hospital’s Harmonica Club will be performing their annual holiday concert on Tuesday, December 21, at 12:00 p.m. noon. Comprised of cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation patients, the Harmonica Club was formed two years ago as a way to improve breathing ability. Playing the harmonica helps focus on exercising and strengthening the diaphragm. The reeds create resistance that mimics pursed lip breathing, a technique that helps control shortness of breath.
With no prior musical experience necessary, each participant in the Harmonica Club receives their own harmonica that spans a range of ten different notes. The club meets and practices twice weekly, playing a variety of songs with specially adapted music. As the playing time increases, breathing endurance increases as well. Participants learn breath control that is like fine tuning a radio for a single note sound.
The Harmonica Club offers an opportunity for patients to share together a unique musical experience and at the same time improve their breathing ability. The holiday concert, which will be held in the Medical Office Plaza lobby, 6006 49th Street North, is open to the public. Refreshments will be available.
